Ninth Grader Dies During Class Field Trip

A heartbreaking event occurred today during a field trip involving students from Canyon View Junior High School, leaving a community in deep sorrow. A ninth-grade student tragically lost his life due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as reported by the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

The atmosphere was heavy with grief outside the school premises as students congregated, lighting candles near the school’s sign as a tribute to their departed peer. Parents are now faced with the difficult decision of whether to allow their children to return to school in the wake of this tragedy.

Ian Campbell, a classmate of the deceased, shared his experience of the shocking incident. He said, “We were engaged in a game of spikeball when we heard a loud noise. Initially, I assumed it was just a bottle popping or a chip bag bursting.” The realization that it was a gunshot left the students in a state of shock.

The field trip took place at South Fork Park in Provo Canyon, as confirmed by the Alpine School District. Following the incident, the district promptly arranged for the students’ return to the school.

In a communication to parents, the school administration detailed the measures being implemented to support the grieving community. Campbell voiced his own hesitation to return to school immediately, stating, “I probably won’t go for the rest of the week. I knew him quite well, and it’s just heartbreaking.”

The district has reassured parents that all other students and teachers are safe. Counseling services are being provided to students, staff, and families to assist them in dealing with the tragedy. A district representative stated, “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this.” Despite the incident, classes will continue for the rest of the week, although parent-teacher conferences have been postponed.

The community is still coming to terms with the loss, with many extending prayers and support to the family and friends of the deceased student.
