NFL player accused of strangling girlfriend for ‘liking’ a post

NFL player Hassan Haskins has been accused of domestic violence. The Tennessee Titans’ backup running back is alleged to have strangled his girlfriend for liking a photo on Instagram. On Thursday, Haskins was taken into custody in Davidson County and charged with felony aggravated assault by strangulation and his girlfriend was also charged in the incident.

According to ESPN, the altercation began on June 22 when Haskins noticed his girlfriend, Makiah Green, “liked” a post of another man’s on Instagram. Haskins was reportedly angered when Green threw his shoes on the floor and when she did not stop, he shoved her to the ground and then used both of his hands to strangle her. It is said that the couple also slapped each other. Green provided police with pictures of bruising to her right arm and cheek, red marks on the front of her neck, and a scratch on the side of her neck as stated by The Tennessean.

The affidavit also states that, in a separate incident, Green threatened to slash the tires of Haskins’ car with a knife, but she stopped when he cocked a gun and said, “I wish you would.” Haskins then left Green at a restaurant and she had to take a ride-sharing service back home. Upon her return, Green allegedly threw a glass at Haskins and then hid in the bedroom. Green then took Haskins’ phone and saw notifications of naked women on Snapchat, which caused her to break his cell phone, break his PlayStation 5 video game console, and assault him according to the police.

The Davidson County prosecutor concluded that there is probable cause to believe that Haskins did unlawfully strangle Green and Green did unlawfully damage Haskins’ property, put her hands around his neck and hit him with a broom according to The Tennessean. Haskins provided the police with videos of Green hitting him with a broom. In addition, Green is said to have ripped a $5,000 chain off of Haskins’ neck after kicking down the bedroom door. Green was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism and was released after posting a $7,500 bond.

Haskins, 23, was released after posting a $10,000 bond and he and Green, 20, have court appearances scheduled for July 10. The Titans released a statement on Friday night which said that they were “aware of the situation and gathering additional information.” Last season, Haskins appeared in 15 games for the Titans, one of which was a start, and he had 25 carries and 93 rushing yards. He also returned 19 kickoffs for 414 return yards in 2022.
