Newborn’s Hospitalization Leads to Father’s Arrest

Edward Ellis Bailey, a 30-year-old Pennsylvania resident, is currently being held on a $100,000 bail after being charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment. Bailey’s charges stem from an incident involving his 27-day-old daughter, who was admitted to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest Hospital on February 19, following a series of seizures.

Bailey had taken his newborn to the hospital after noticing her unusual behavior. Upon examination, the hospital staff discovered that the infant had suffered a near-fatal head injury, consistent with blunt force trauma. This alarming discovery prompted the hospital to alert the Carbon County Children and Youth Services.

Court documents reveal that Bailey admitted to the police that he had become frustrated with his daughter’s incessant crying. In his statement, Bailey confessed to “lightly dropping” the baby on the bed. His frustration escalated when the crying persisted, leading him to carry the baby down the stairs at a fast pace, which resulted in him tripping and falling down three steps with the baby in his arms.

Bailey noticed his daughter’s abnormal behavior around 7 a.m., shortly after the fall. He observed her twitching and eventually having seizures. He immediately contacted the baby’s mother, and together, they rushed the infant to the hospital around 10 a.m.

The hospital staff alerted the authorities later that afternoon. According to a post by the Jim Thorpe Borough Police Department, the baby remains in critical condition. Bailey is currently detained at the Carbon County Correctional Facility, facing charges of aggravated assault and child endangerment.
