Musician Found Dead in Backyard Pool

Broward homicide and crime scene detectives are investigating the Venezuelan singer and composer’s death as the medical examiner determines its cause.

WESTON, Fla. — Venezuelan singer, composer and pianist Gustavo Ormo, known professionally as Gus Ormo, was found dead Friday in a swimming pool at his Weston home, prompting an investigation into circumstances Broward authorities have described as suspicious.

Deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue personnel responded at about 9 a.m. Oct. 16 to a report of a possible drowning at a home on Quail Roost Drive. Emergency crews found an adult man submerged in the backyard pool and pronounced him dead at the scene. Ormo’s relatives later identified him to South Florida news outlets, while investigators initially stopped short of publicly confirming the victim’s identity. His body was taken to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office, where the cause and manner of death remained pending.

Detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide and Crime Scene units were called to investigate. Authorities have described the incident as suspicious but have not announced that Ormo’s death was a homicide. No arrest, suspect or motive had been disclosed as of Saturday, and investigators had not said publicly whether another person was involved. The use of homicide detectives in a suspicious death investigation does not by itself establish that a killing occurred.

Questions surrounding the scene intensified after reports and news footage showed an object described as a cord or rope extending near or into the swimming pool. Early emergency communications also reportedly indicated that the person in the water might have been restrained. Broward authorities have not publicly confirmed that Ormo was tied up, identified the object seen near him or said whether it had any connection to his death. Those details therefore remain part of the investigation rather than established findings.

Ormo’s sister, Antonieta Ormo, confirmed her brother’s death to CBS Miami and said the family had little information about what happened. Telemundo 51 also reported that Ormo’s family confirmed his identity. Public property records cited by local news organizations connected Ormo to the Weston residence where he was found. Authorities have not publicly said how long he had been in the pool or described the events leading up to the discovery.

Ormo was a Venezuelan musician from Maracaibo whose work included singing, songwriting, composition and piano performance. He was known for romantic music and had increasingly emphasized instrumental piano pieces in recent projects. His recordings included the 2025 album “Alquimia,” and he released the six-track instrumental project “AGAPE” in October 2026. Promotional material for the project described it as the product of years of musical development.

His work also reflected his Venezuelan background. In a January interview at an event in Aventura, Florida, Ormo discussed his career and roots, according to CBS Miami. He had written music connected to Venezuela and themes of unity and reconciliation. In remarks about his recent instrumental work, Ormo described music as a way of encouraging people to experience emotion without relying on words.

Ormo remained publicly active shortly before his death. His social media activity included promotion of material connected to “AGAPE” on the day before he was found. The timing drew attention from fans and followers after news of his death spread, but authorities have disclosed nothing indicating that his recent musical work or online activity was connected to the investigation.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has released limited information about what detectives found at the property. Investigators have not publicly established whether Ormo drowned, suffered another medical event or died because of another person’s actions. The medical examiner’s findings will be central to determining the cause and manner of death and could help investigators decide whether the case remains a suspicious death investigation or develops into a criminal case.

As of Saturday, the investigation remained active and no arrests had been announced. Authorities had not released a final account of what happened at Ormo’s home, and the medical examiner had not publicly issued a cause or manner of death. Detectives were continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding his death.
