Mother Beat 4-Year-Old to Death After Not Using Toilet

A Georgia woman has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the brutal murder of her 4-year-old son. Sophia Williams, 43, was convicted of malice murder, felony murder, child cruelty, and aggravated battery in August, as reported by the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office.

Williams, a resident of Decatur, was found guilty of killing her son, Anthony Vice, in March 2022. Prosecutors revealed that Williams had admitted to physically punishing Anthony for not being potty trained. She confessed to hitting him with her hand, a house slipper, a purse strap, and a charging cord when he failed to use the toilet or had accidents.

On the day of Anthony’s death, a 13-year-old child also residing in the home reported that Williams had beaten Anthony for refusing to use the bathroom. Williams claimed that Anthony had accidentally hit his head the previous week and denied responsibility for any injuries he had sustained.

The 13-year-old witness told authorities that Anthony appeared dizzy and fell to the floor after being assaulted by Williams. The District Attorney’s office reported that Williams then placed Anthony on her bed and threw water on him. Although he revived momentarily, he soon became unresponsive again, with his only movements being reflexive jerks of his arm and leg.

Williams was found to have searched for phrases like “remedy for concussion” and “coma – symptoms and causes” on her phone before falling asleep. She woke up around 5 a.m. to find Anthony making a low grunting sound and his body completely limp.

According to prosecutors, Williams noticed that Anthony had stopped breathing and initially called his father before dialing 911. However, she admitted to officers that she was hesitant to call for help due to the visible bruises on Anthony’s body. An autopsy revealed that Anthony’s cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, and it was determined that he could have survived if Williams had sought medical attention when she first noticed signs of his head injury.

During Williams’ sentencing, DeKalb County Assistant District Attorney Sarah Hillren emphasized the severity of the assault on Anthony. The presiding judge described Anthony’s death as one of the most horrific crimes she had ever encountered, as reported by local ABC affiliate WSB. Hillren concluded that due to the extreme cruelty of the crime, Williams should not be allowed to live any part of her life in the community.
