Missing Woman Survives Four Nights in Woods with Help from Loyal Dog

A 72-year-old woman, Pamela Helmstadter, was found alive in a Maine forest after being lost for four days. She was discovered near the body of her deceased 82-year-old husband, John Helmstadter, with their faithful black lab, Lucy, by her side. The couple had lost their way during a hike in the woods of Alexander, Washington County.

Pamela was found approximately 200 yards from her husband’s body. Lucy, their dog, was still with her, trying to keep her safe. According to the Maine Warden Service, Lucy was very protective of Pamela and would lay on her chest, likely to keep her warm during the cold nights.

Sgt. Josh Beal of the Maine Warden Service noted that Lucy’s actions may have played a crucial role in Pamela’s survival. The dog’s warmth could have been a significant factor in preventing Pamela from succumbing to the harsh weather conditions, which included rain and temperatures as low as 28 degrees.

Pamela, who had braved the elements without a cellphone, was suffering from severe hypothermia when search crews found her. The circumstances leading to the couple’s predicament began when John fell and was unable to get up. Pamela had left to seek help but ended up lost.

The search for the couple was initiated when a vigilant neighbor noticed an uncollected package on their front porch. The neighbor’s concern grew when one of the couple’s two dogs returned home alone, prompting a call to the police.

Pamela later shared with authorities that she had lost hope of being found alive. However, the sound of search helicopters overhead gave her renewed hope in the hours leading up to her rescue. Upon discovery, Pamela’s body temperature was a mere 90.7 degrees. She was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
