Mass shooting at park after ‘altercation’

2 dead, 7 injured in Washington Park shooting, police say – Chicago Tribune

An argument in Washington Park Tuesday night ended in two people’s deaths and seven injuries, police said.

Deputy Chief Fred Melean with the Chicago Police Department said in a news conference at the park across the street from the emergency room of University of Chicago Medicine that a fight broke out there just before 8 p.m. and shots were fired.

According to police, paramedics treated five men and a woman at University of Chicago Medicine after responding to East 51st Street and South Champlain Avenue.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the right shoulder and self-transported to Insight Hospital in good condition, police said. In addition, a 46-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were self-transported to the University of Chicago, both in good condition with graze wounds to their right calf and right arm, respectively.

Lionel Coward, 43, has been identified by the Cook County medical examiner as one of the two men who died. The victim was shot in the back of the head and pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m. at U. of C.

An additional victim, a 20-year-old, was initially taken to the U. of C. with critical injuries. The medical examiner and police reported that he was pronounced dead at 9:55 p.m. from multiple gunshot wounds. The identity of the man has not yet been determined.

Paramedics transported the remaining victims to U. of C. all appeared to be in good condition. Gunshot wounds were sustained by a 30-year-old man on his left shin, a 39-year-old man on his right ankle, a 27-year-old woman on her upper left thigh and a 22-year-old man on his left elbow.
