Mesa, AZ – A man was fatally shot during a dispute at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Mesa over the weekend. On Saturday at approximately 3 a.m., Mesa police responded to the shooting at the McDonald’s near Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue.
The victim, 22-year-old Daniel Betker, was involved in a verbal altercation with 26-year-old Carlos Heard II and a group of other people when Heard allegedly shot him multiple times. Betker was taken to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.
After reviewing surveillance footage from the area, police were able to identify a license plate and vehicle belonging to Heard. They subsequently located and arrested him at a Mesa apartment complex. During a search of Heard’s residence, authorities found a firearm that matched the one used in the shooting, as well as other evidence. Heard is now facing charges of second-degree murder, endangerment, and disorderly conduct.
According to witnesses, the altercation between the two groups escalated into the shooting. The exact motive behind the dispute remains under investigation, and detectives are in the process of interviewing witnesses to gather more information.
