On Tuesday, a St. Louis man was arrested after video appeared to show him execution-style shooting a homeless man.
Police said Deshawn Thomas, 23, has been arrested but has not been charged in connection with the Monday murder.
A video posted online shows Thomas struggling to load his gun as he stands just a few feet away behind the homeless man, who is sitting on the curb.
According to the video, he then appeared to fire on the victim, who raised his arms at one point, but did not attempt to run away.
Police said the shooting took place around 10 a.m. Monday in downtown St. Louis.
The victim, whose name has not been released, had minutes earlier fended off Thomas at a Shell gas station. Afterward, Thomas chased him across the street before allegedly shooting him.
Maj. Ryan Cousins expressed his shock at the incident, stating that “any homicide is unnerving, but for this one to happen here, at this time, very much so.”
The victim has not been identified, but is believed to be in his 40s. The video of the crime was posted on Twitter, but was removed due to its graphic nature.
The suspect, Thomas, was located by police at a local library after fleeing the scene.
Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley re-tweeted the video and asked for Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner to resign. Gardner has been under scrutiny after a driver facing felony charges for robbery hit a teenager earlier this month, leading to her losing her legs.
Republicans in Missouri have said that instead of Gardner, the state needs to handle the prosecution of violent crimes, and have filed court documents to remove her from office.
