Man Killed Outside Walmart Store

Broward homicide detectives are reviewing the shooting after the woman involved claimed self-defense.

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 62-year-old Lauderhill man died after a woman shot him Tuesday in a Walmart parking lot during an argument over a parking space, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Bart Diguglielmo was taken to Broward Health Medical Center after the shooting outside the Walmart at 7900 W. McNab Road. He later died from his injury. The woman stayed at the scene, cooperated with detectives and told investigators she fired in self-defense, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at about 12:28 p.m. June 30, when Broward County Regional Communications received calls about gunfire in the parking lot. Deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews responded and found Diguglielmo with a gunshot wound. Investigators said the first findings show Diguglielmo and the woman had been involved in a verbal dispute over a parking space before the shooting. The woman’s name has not been released.

Video obtained by local news outlets showed part of the confrontation before the shot was fired. Authorities have not released the full video or said whether Diguglielmo was armed. Detectives have not announced an arrest. The sheriff’s office said the woman remained at the Walmart after the shooting and spoke with investigators. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as deputies closed off part of the parking lot and emergency crews worked near parked vehicles.

Family members identified Diguglielmo as a military veteran and retired nurse. His daughter, Amanda, told Local 10 News that her father was a “good man” and said she wanted him remembered for his life, not only for the parking lot confrontation. She said no one “deserves to lose their life over a parking spot.” Relatives said Diguglielmo had served in the Army and had lived in Lauderhill.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the case. When the investigation is complete, detectives will send the case to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will decide whether criminal charges will be filed. As of Wednesday, authorities had not announced charges against the woman or released a final account of what led to the gunfire.

The Walmart is in a busy commercial area along West McNab Road in North Lauderdale, west of Florida’s Turnpike. The shooting drew police tape, patrol vehicles and attention from shoppers who were at the store during the lunch hour. The store parking lot became the center of the investigation as detectives reviewed witness statements, video and physical evidence from the scene.

The case remains open. The next major step is the completion of the homicide investigation and review by the Broward County State Attorney’s Office.
