Man Fatally Shot by Deputies While Holding Toddler

A man was fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies late Thursday following a tense standoff outside a residence. The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was reportedly holding a toddler in one arm and a handgun in the other. The incident occurred on Alhambra Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. The man was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The situation began with a call reporting a man with a gun outside a residence. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the man on the front porch of the house, holding a child. Despite attempts to negotiate, deputies opened fire when the man raised his weapon towards them. The toddler was unharmed in the incident.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by detectives from the department’s Homicide Bureau. As of Saturday, the man’s identity had not been disclosed, pending notification of relatives and further investigative procedures.

The standoff, which lasted over 25 minutes, took place on the porch of the residence. Officials reported that negotiators repeatedly urged the man to put down the gun and release the child. At least two patrol units and fire paramedics were on standby nearby. The man was transported by paramedics around 10:07 p.m. and later pronounced dead. No deputies were injured in the incident and a handgun was recovered at the scene.

The child involved in the incident is believed to be around 2 years old. Early witness accounts suggest the man was holding the child in one arm while wielding the gun in the other. The residence is reportedly linked to the man’s girlfriend. It remains unclear whether the man fired his weapon during the standoff or made any demands. The number of rounds fired by deputies is also unknown at this time.

The shooting occurred in a residential area of Paramount, a city in southeast Los Angeles County. Deputy-involved shootings in the county trigger parallel reviews by the Sheriff’s Department, the county’s Office of Inspector General, and, in deadly cases, the District Attorney’s Office. As of Saturday, the man’s name and the child’s relationship to him had not been released. The toddler was placed with family and medically evaluated as a precaution.

The scene was processed by Homicide Bureau detectives, who collected items from the porch area and canvassed for surveillance video on nearby homes. The deputies involved in the shooting were separated and interviewed under standard protocol. A formal autopsy will determine the man’s cause of death and whether he had any injuries other than gunshot wounds.

As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made or additional suspects announced. The initial dispute that led to the standoff remains unclear. The Sheriff’s Department stated that the shooting is still under active review, with the next public update expected after preliminary interviews and evidence reviews are completed in the coming days. The child remains uninjured and with relatives.
