Man Dies After Random Street Assault

A 58-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted on a Bronx street last month, according to police and sources. The incident occurred on August 4 around 5 p.m. near Jerome Avenue and West Mosholu Parkway North in Norwood. The alleged assailant, 29-year-old Dequan Jackson, reportedly approached the victim from behind and struck him in the back of the head, causing him to fall onto the street.

Emergency medical technicians responded to the scene and transported the injured man to Saint Barnabas Hospital. He remained in the hospital for over a month before passing away on September 7. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed, pending notification of his family.

Jackson was apprehended at the scene and initially charged with assault. However, in light of the victim’s death, authorities are considering upgrading the charges. Jackson has a history of arrests, with 10 prior charges including assault, reckless endangerment, grand larceny, and criminal possession of a weapon.

In 2021, Jackson, a Bronx resident, was arrested and charged with assault after allegedly striking his 5-year-old daughter in the arm. During his arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court for the August incident, Jackson pleaded not guilty and was subsequently released without bail. His next court appearance is slated for September 17.

The tragic incident underscores the ongoing issue of random street violence in urban areas, raising concerns about public safety and the need for effective law enforcement strategies.
