A Minnesota resident, Lue Chang, 32, is facing charges of second-degree murder following the fatal shooting of his cousin, Nichanon Kittikroekphon, a well-known Thai musician. The incident occurred during a family gathering on September 21, intended to celebrate recent births within the family, according to local law enforcement.
Brooklyn Park police were informed by witnesses that approximately 30 individuals were present at the home during the celebration. It was during this event that Chang allegedly fired two shots at Kittikroekphon, causing him to fall to the ground. A third shot was reportedly fired into Kittikroekphon’s back as he attempted to escape, as stated in the affidavit.
Several men at the gathering managed to restrain Chang and disarm him, while others dialed 911. When questioned about his motives, Chang allegedly stated that he shot Kittikroekphon because he felt disrespected. Another witness reported hearing Chang tell Kittikroekphon, “today, you are going to die,” prior to the shooting. Surveillance footage from the scene showed Chang approaching Kittikroekphon and speaking to him in an agitated manner. Investigators noted that Kittikroekphon was unarmed and posed no threat to Chang.
Emergency medical services transported Kittikroekphon to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The affidavit also noted that several children, including a two-year-old, were in close proximity to the shooting.
Following the incident, Chang was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Hennepin County Jail on a $1 million bond. If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 21.
Kittikroekphon, known by his stage name Tswb Moua, was a rising talent in Thailand’s music industry, according to a post on the Hmong Talk Facebook page. He had relocated to the U.S. to live with his brother.
