An Ohio resident, Michael Mayor, 34, was apprehended on December 11, following an incident on December 5 that resulted in a one-year-old girl suffering a skull fracture. Mayor is alleged to have confessed to the police that he was responsible for the injuries. Initially, he was indicted on six felony charges, including felonious assault and child endangerment. However, on December 20, the infant succumbed to her injuries, which court documents attribute to Mayor.
The incident reportedly occurred at 3:12 p.m. on December 5, while Mayor’s wife, a babysitter in the Dayton area, was looking after the child. The babysitter, believing the baby was asleep, noticed that the child was breathing but unresponsive. Piqua police reports indicate that she informed dispatchers that the toddler was “pale, had bruises on her head, and she was unsure of where they came from.”
The child was rushed to Dayton Children’s Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a skull fracture at the back of her head, a subdural hematoma, and other “complex” injuries resulting from a “massive impact.”
On the morning of December 5, the babysitter, while taking other children to school, reportedly left the toddler under Mayor’s care. Upon her return, Mayor allegedly told her that he had put the child down for a nap on the bedroom floor. However, by 3 p.m., after checking on the child several times, the babysitter noticed that the toddler had not awakened and subsequently called 911.
Given that Mayor was the only adult present with the toddler, the police began investigating him. Along with prosecutors, they decided that he should be charged with assaulting the child. According to the police report, Mayor allegedly confessed to shaking the child and slamming her on the bedroom floor multiple times until she stopped crying.
Following the alleged assault, Mayor reportedly stated that he thought the child had fallen asleep and left her on the floor. Mayor was taken into custody on December 11 and is currently being held on a $1 million bond. No additional charges have been filed against him since the documents filed on December 20 that noted the baby’s death. Court records indicate that Mayor’s next court date is a bond modification hearing on January 2.
