A dispute over a song selection on a jukebox at a Mexican restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, escalated into a fatal shooting early Monday morning. The victim, identified as 54-year-old Socorro Camacho, was reportedly killed during the altercation at Antojitos Mexicanos around 1:30 a.m.
According to eyewitness accounts, two patrons got into a heated argument over a song one of them had chosen to play on the jukebox. The disagreement quickly spiraled out of control, leading to a deadly exchange of gunfire. Mauro Bonilla, who spoke with three witnesses, recounted the events.
Bonilla explained that the man who took offense to the other’s song choice was the first to draw his weapon. However, it was allegedly the man who had been taunted that initiated the shooting. The argument reportedly centered around the type of music played, with one man claiming the other was not a “real Mexican” for his song choice.
The incident escalated further when the man who had been insulted began to chase the other, firing multiple shots. Bonilla expressed shock at the violent incident, noting that such occurrences were rare in what he described as a “good neighborhood.”
The 911 dispatcher reported that the victim, Camacho, was shot three times. The shooter fled the scene and, as of Tuesday morning, had not been apprehended, according to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. The manager of Antojitos Mexicanos confirmed the shooter’s flight from the scene.
Camacho’s brother, who had been searching for him throughout the morning, received confirmation of his death from Fort Lauderdale detectives. He expressed his hope for the police to capture the suspect, stating there was little else they could do at this point.
