In a shocking incident in northern India, a woman has been charged with the alleged murder of her six-year-old niece. The woman, identified as Poonam, is believed to have drowned the child in a tub of water during a family wedding in Panipat. The incident occurred on Monday when the family had gathered for the celebration.
The victim, a young girl named Vidhi, was attending the wedding with her parents, infant brother, and grandmother. The family’s joy turned into a nightmare when Vidhi’s father received a distressing call that his daughter had gone missing. This prompted an immediate search by the family members.
The search ended in a tragic discovery when Vidhi’s grandmother, Omwati, found the child’s lifeless body in a nearby storeroom, her head submerged in water. Despite being rushed to NC Medical College, Vidhi was later pronounced dead, leaving the family in shock and grief.
Following the incident, local police arrested Poonam, who later confessed to the murder of Vidhi. According to local media reports, Poonam revealed that her motive was jealousy, as she did not want anyone at the wedding to outshine her in terms of beauty.
Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh stated that Poonam committed the crime when all the guests were away from the house. She reportedly saw Vidhi climbing the stairs, followed her to the terrace, engaged her in conversation, and then drowned her in a plastic tub filled with water outside the storeroom.
In a chilling revelation, Poonam also confessed to the murders of three other children, including another niece and her own son, whom she also drowned. Superintendent Singh reported that Poonam admitted during interrogation that she was “irritated by beautiful girls.”
In 2023, Poonam allegedly murdered her sister-in-law’s nine-year-old daughter and then killed her own son to divert suspicion. Earlier this year, in August, she reportedly killed a young girl in a nearby town because she was “prettier” than her. The family had previously considered these deaths accidental, unaware that Poonam was behind these heinous acts.
