Dillon Field pleaded guilty to domestic assault after a February confrontation that prompted Maple Grove Hospital to go into lockdown.
MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — A former Hennepin County detention deputy has been sentenced to a year of probation and 16 hours of community service after pleading guilty to domestic assault in a case stemming from a confrontation at a hospital while his wife was giving birth.
Dillon Matthew Field, 30, was sentenced Friday, Aug. 7, after previously pleading guilty to one count of domestic assault. Under a stay of adjudication, the case is expected to be dismissed if he successfully completes probation. Field was also ordered to complete a domestic violence course and attend counseling, according to reports on the sentencing.
The case began Feb. 5 at Maple Grove Hospital, where Field’s wife was preparing to give birth. Court records cited by local news organizations say Field had been allowed to attend the birth on the condition that he behave himself. The records describe a series of confrontations that ended with Field’s mother-in-law alleging that he shoved her as she tried to get hospital staff.
According to the criminal complaint, Field became verbally aggressive toward his mother-in-law soon after arriving at the hospital and was removed from the delivery room. His wife and mother-in-law later allowed him to return on the condition that he not argue or yell. The complaint says he then began yelling at his wife while she was in a bathtub in the delivery room bathroom.
Field’s wife again told him to leave, according to the court records. Her mother went to get a nurse, and investigators said Field tried to close the bathroom door while his wife was inside. The mother-in-law told police that Field shoved her as she moved past him to seek help. Nurses responded, and Field then left the room, according to court documents.
Field’s conduct and his communications with hospital staff prompted Maple Grove Hospital to go into lockdown, authorities said. Police were called to investigate the reported assault. No reports reviewed for this story indicated that anyone suffered a serious physical injury during the confrontation.
Prosecutors originally charged Field with domestic assault and fifth-degree assault. The assault count was dismissed when Field entered his guilty plea to domestic assault. Reports of the sentencing said he received a one-year stayed sentence requiring him to complete a year of probation, along with the community service and other conditions imposed by the court.
The criminal complaint also documented allegations from Field’s wife about earlier incidents in their marriage. She told investigators that she had been living with her mother for several months because of what she described as physical and emotional abuse. She also alleged that Field had assaulted her while she was nine months pregnant. Those statements were allegations contained in the court record and were separate from the conduct underlying his guilty plea.
Field worked as a detention deputy for the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office when the charges were filed. The sheriff’s office said in March that he had been placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation was underway. More recent reports have described him as a former detention deputy, although details about when or how his employment ended have not been publicly established in the sources reviewed.
If Field completes the terms of his probation, the domestic assault case will be dismissed under the stay of adjudication. His probation conditions include community service, a domestic violence course and counseling, according to reports on the Aug. 7 sentence.
