A tragic incident unfolded in Ohio when a high school lacrosse player succumbed to injuries sustained during a game. Dylan Veselic, a 16-year-old sophomore at Bay Village High School, was struck by a ball at the base of his skull while attempting to block a shot during a match against Olmsted Falls. Witnesses at the scene reported that Veselic was immediately rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to another facility for surgery.
The Veselic family announced Dylan’s passing on Thursday morning, expressing their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. The family’s statement read, “With heavy hearts, we share the news that Dylan has passed away from injuries suffered during a lacrosse game. We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond.”
Veselic, a long stick midfielder, was the captain of his team. He was remembered by his school’s athletic director, Matt Spellman, as an exceptional student-athlete who consistently displayed leadership, empathy, and a positive attitude both on and off the field. “Dylan was always wearing a smile on his face while supporting his fellow teammates,” Spellman said.
Bay High School principal Jason Martin also paid tribute to Veselic, describing him as a well-liked and respected young man who touched many lives with his kindness, character, and spirit. The community of Bay Village, located west of Cleveland, honored Veselic by placing lacrosse sticks, hockey sticks, and soccer balls on their front porches.
A fundraiser set up for the Veselic family has already raised nearly $100,000. In the wake of this tragedy, the school’s athletic department canceled a series of games scheduled for Thursday through Saturday.
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine has reported that both men’s and women’s lacrosse exhibit above-average risks of injury compared to other high school sports. The head or face is the most frequent site of injury, with concussions being the most prevalent diagnosis.
