Halloween Store Shooting Leaves Pregnant Woman Dead, Six Wounded

Police said the attack inside a Spirit Halloween store was targeted and involved one suspect who remained at large Saturday.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — A pregnant woman was killed and six other people were wounded in a targeted shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center on Friday night, authorities said, leaving investigators searching for a lone suspect as Halloween events began across the city.

Fairfield police said officers responded to the shopping center at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and found seven people with gunshot wounds. The woman, identified by police as 31-year-old Constance Hages, died at the scene. The six surviving victims were taken to hospitals. Police said Saturday that evidence indicated the shooting stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect, but they had not announced an arrest or publicly identified the person they were seeking.

Three of the wounded — a 16-year-old boy and men ages 19 and 32 — were in critical condition Saturday, police said. A 23-year-old man was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Two other men, ages 19 and 43, were treated and released. Authorities did not disclose what led to the shooting or explain why investigators believed the attack was targeted.

Investigators were reviewing surveillance video and other evidence while interviewing witnesses who were inside or near the store when the gunfire began. Police initially worked to determine whether more than one shooter might have been involved, but a Saturday update said investigators believed a single suspect was responsible. No suspect description had been released, and a motive remained publicly unknown.

The FBI’s Sacramento office was assisting Fairfield police with the investigation. Local and regional agencies also responded to the shopping center after the shooting, including the California Highway Patrol, Solano County Sheriff’s Office and Suisun City police. Officers searched areas of the mall as they worked to determine whether the shooter remained inside and whether shoppers faced an ongoing threat.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as shoppers fled the seasonal costume store or sought cover. Daniela Seabra Rios told the Los Angeles Times that she was in a vehicle across from the store with her son when she saw crowds, including families, running from the area. Other witnesses described hearing gunfire before shoppers and employees moved toward exits as police arrived.

The shooting occurred on the eve of Halloween, when the seasonal retailer was serving shoppers making last-minute purchases. Spirit Halloween said it was saddened by the violence and was cooperating with law enforcement. The company said the Fairfield store would remain closed until further notice. Solano Town Center remained open Saturday but canceled a Halloween trick-or-treating event that had been scheduled at the mall.

Police said there was no continuing threat to the public from the shooting but acknowledged the concern the attack had caused as families prepared for Halloween celebrations. Authorities urged residents to remain alert while investigators continued examining video, physical evidence and witness accounts. The FBI said its Evidence Response Team was assisting the local investigation.

No arrest had been announced as of Saturday, and police had not released a possible motive or a description of the suspect. Investigators continued working to identify and locate the person believed responsible while determining the circumstances that led to the shooting.
