A beloved family man was fatally shot near his home in Brighton Beach, according to police and family members. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Friday at 2954 Brighton 12th Street. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Elijah Scott, suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Scott was known for his devotion to his family. His sister, Ebony Scott, described him as a generous uncle who spoiled his nieces and nephews. He was also deeply caring towards his mother. “He would do anything for his mother. Family was everything to him,” she said.
The assailant, who was riding a scooter, fired multiple shots at Scott, leading to his death. The police are still investigating whether the shooter was in motion or had stopped to fire the shots. After the shooting, the perpetrator fled the scene on a black electric scooter.
Scott was known in his community as a person who was always ready to help those in need. “He was the type of person that showed up for anybody who needed him,” Ebony Scott said. Despite being rushed to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, Scott’s life could not be saved.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. In the aftermath of the incident, friends of Scott set up a candlelit memorial in his honor. One friend described Scott as a person with a “great heart” who cared for others and would intervene to stop any wrongdoing.
Scott had a criminal record, with five prior arrests, the most recent being in 2023 for criminal possession of a weapon, according to police sources. The shooter, who remains at large, was reportedly wearing a baseball cap, black jacket, and gray hooded sweatshirt. Ballistics were recovered from the scene, and photos show numerous evidence markers on the sidewalk. No further information is currently available.
