Garbage Man Killed in Tragic Work Accident

A New York City Sanitation Department employee tragically lost his life in a work-related accident on Saturday evening. The worker, Richard Errico, was a 19-year veteran of the department and was fatally struck by a garbage truck outside the DSNY garage for Districts 11 and 13 in Douglaston.

Errico, who had dedicated nearly two decades of his life to maintaining the cleanliness and safety of New York City streets, reportedly fell from the truck and was subsequently run over. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, underscoring the daily risks sanitation workers face while performing their duties.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and DSNY Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Errico’s death and were present at the accident scene on Saturday night. Mayor Adams extended his condolences to Errico’s family, friends, and coworkers, recognizing the significant contribution Errico made to the community.

In his statement, Mayor Adams said, “Our thoughts tonight are with Richard’s family, friends, coworkers, and everyone who knew and loved him.” He also mentioned that he had met with Errico’s relatives and added, “Richard kept our streets and communities safe and clean for more than 19 years, and we should all be keeping Richard and his family in our prayers.”

Commissioner Tisch also paid tribute to Errico, stating that he served the people of Douglaston, Littleneck, and Bayside with pride during his tenure. She urged all New Yorkers to pray for his family during this difficult time.
