Garbage Dispute Leads to Murder of Grandma and Son

A tragic incident unfolded in Henderson, North Carolina, when a dispute over garbage led to the fatal shooting of a mother and son. The incident occurred on Sunday evening in the 600 block of Maple Street, a residential area located approximately 40 miles northeast of Raleigh. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered the victims, identified as Teresa Davis, 63, and her son, Joseph Jeffreys Jr., 26, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, 41-year-old Michael Sharron Wright, was quickly identified by detectives who subsequently issued an arrest warrant for two counts of murder. While the police did not provide specific details regarding the circumstances of the alleged homicide, information from interviews conducted by local CBS affiliate WNCN with the victims’ family and friends helped to piece together the events leading up to the fatal confrontation.

According to these accounts, Davis and Wright were neighbors. The dispute began when Jeffreys confronted Wright about garbage cans that Wright had allegedly thrown into Davis’ yard. The confrontation escalated, resulting in Wright allegedly shooting both victims with a firearm belonging to Jeffreys.

The incident, described by Davis’ friend, Tennisha Eaton, as a senseless act over “some freakin’ trash,” took place in front of Jeffreys’ three children. Eaton expressed her heartbreak over the children witnessing the death of their father and grandmother.

Wright, who was considered armed and dangerous, had a previous conviction for murder. Records indicate that he was released from prison in January 2024 after serving a 14-year sentence for the murder of his uncle, Kirk Douglas Wright Sr., in 2010.

In an unexpected turn of events, Wright surrendered himself to the authorities on Monday. He contacted Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain in the early hours of the morning, stating that he would only surrender to Fountain himself. Wright was subsequently taken into custody in the parking lot of a local restaurant. He is currently being held at the Granville County Detention Center without bond.
