Former Ohio State Defensive Lineman Dies at 30

Donovan Munger, a former defensive lineman for Ohio State, has passed away at the age of 30, according to a social media post by his mother last Thursday. The cause of his death has not been disclosed. However, it is known that Munger had a history of blood clot issues during his football career, which prematurely ended his time on the field.

Munger was a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ national championship team in 2014. He was a native of Cleveland and a four-star recruit from Shaker Heights High School. He played for Ohio State from 2013 to 2015, participating in 11 games in 2014 and 12 games in the subsequent season.

His mother, in her Instagram post, expressed her profound grief over the loss of her eldest child. She requested prayers for her family during this difficult time.

Munger’s health issues began with a diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, which led him to redshirt his first year. The condition eventually forced him to retire from the sport after the 2015 season.

Larry Johnson, the defensive line coach for Ohio State in 2016, reflected on Munger’s situation. He acknowledged the difficulty of having to give up a sport that one has dedicated their life to and loves deeply. However, he also expressed his belief that Munger understood that stepping away from football was in his best interest. Johnson emphasized that Munger remained a part of their unit and that his focus shifted to excelling in his studies and potentially pursuing a career in coaching.

During his football career, Munger recorded five tackles and one tackle for loss.
