Gleaton Jones, a former member of the University of Georgia’s 2021 national championship football team, tragically passed away on Friday at the age of 21. Jones was critically injured in a car accident earlier in the week, which resulted in a severe brain injury, according to reports.
Jones, a walk-on running back for the Bulldogs, did not play in any games and was no longer part of the team at the time of his death. Prior to the accident, he had been on a hunting trip on St. George Island in Florida.
Jones’ obituary paints a picture of a young man who lived life to the fullest, radiating joy and enthusiasm in all his pursuits. Known affectionately as ‘Gleat’ by his closest friends, he was described as joyful, magnetic, and a source of light that could fill any room. His humility, kindness, empathy, and personable nature were highlighted, along with his ability to make his friends feel loved and important.
Born and raised in Albany, Georgia, Jones is survived by his parents, Marlin and Kirk Jones, and his brother, Cole. He was due to graduate in the spring with a degree in marketing and had plans to return home to assist his father in managing their family farm.
Jones’ obituary also emphasized his deep connection to his Southwest Georgia roots and his love for the outdoors. An avid hunter, he had a deep appreciation for nature and often spoke about his love for farming, a passion he shared with his father and grandfather. Whether skiing in the mountains with his family or embarking on numerous hunting trips with friends, Jones found joy in the outdoors and created cherished memories with those he loved.
