A tragic accident claimed the life of a former college basketball player from Mississippi over the weekend. Cameron Woodall, a renowned athlete who had previously led his high school team to a state championship, died after losing control and flipping his all-terrain vehicle (ATV). The mishap occurred in Raymond, Mississippi on Midway Road around 11:25 p.m. on Saturday, according to Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard. Woodall was 26 years old.
The accident transpired while Woodall and another person, also on an ATV, were traveling down the road. The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, AMR, the Byram Volunteer Fire Department, and the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department were among the first to respond to the scene. Woodall was declared dead due to his injuries, while the second individual was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Known affectionately as ‘Big Cam’, Woodall was a former player for Tougaloo College. The institution remembered him for his significant contributions to the college’s athletics. The athletics department expressed their grief on Instagram, emphasizing Woodall’s commanding presence, fierce competitiveness on the court, and his kind-hearted spirit off the court. They extended their deepest sympathies to his family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the accident, which is still in progress. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones extended his condolences to Woodall’s family, friends, and the Raymond basketball community, acknowledging the deep loss they are experiencing.
Woodall’s basketball career was marked by significant achievements. He played a crucial role in leading Raymond High to state championships in 2017 and 2018. After his high school career, he continued to play at the collegiate level, first at Copiah-Lincoln Community College and later at Tougaloo College, where he played most recently in the 2022-23 season.
