A tragic accident in central Texas claimed the lives of five young women, all in their 20s, who were en route to a lake house vacation. The incident occurred on Friday, July 25, when a truck hauling a horse trailer veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with multiple vehicles, including the women’s Mercedes SUV, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The SUV flipped over upon impact and was engulfed in flames, resulting in the immediate death of all its occupants. The victims were identified as Thalia Salinas, Ruby Cruz, Brianna Valadez, Desiree Cervantez, and Jacqueline Velazco. They were all close friends since their middle school days.
Salinas, who was driving the SUV, was taking her friends to a lake house to celebrate her 23rd birthday. Her family was expected to join them at the lake house, which was just 20 minutes away from the accident site.
The driver of the truck, Kody Talley, reportedly fled the scene following the accident. He was later apprehended and has been charged with five counts of manslaughter. The drivers of the other vehicles involved in the accident sustained only minor injuries.
Talley’s truck was found crashed into a fence, abandoned by the driver. Officials reported that he was not tested for drugs or alcohol on the day of the crash.
The Salinas family expressed their grief to CBS NewsTexas, stating, “Words can’t describe how devastated we are. We were en route to celebrate Thalia’s birthday in Kingsland, Texas, at her favorite place — on the lake — with all her favorite people. Then we got news of the girls’ passing away in the worst accident we could ever imagine. We will never recover from losing Thalia, Brianna, Ruby, Jackie and Desi.”
The incident has left a deep scar on the community, as they mourn the loss of these young lives. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
