Fitness Icon Richard Simmons Passes Away at 76

Renowned fitness instructor Richard Simmons has passed away at the age of 76, a day after expressing gratitude to his fans for their birthday wishes on social media. Simmons, who had been out of the public eye for the past decade, gained popularity in the 1970s and ’80s after establishing numerous fitness centers across the United States and releasing his high-energy workout tapes.

Simmons’ death was reported to be of natural causes. Earlier this year, he had disclosed that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. Despite his health issues and age, Simmons maintained a positive outlook on life. In a recent interview with People Magazine, he expressed his gratitude for being alive and his commitment to helping others, a mission he pursued daily.

Simmons, best known for his “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” series, had announced plans earlier this year to collaborate with acclaimed producer and composer Patrick Leonard on a Broadway musical. His flamboyant, upbeat demeanor, which was often imitated, inspired millions of Americans to pursue fitness for several decades.

The fitness guru authored nine books, including the New York Times Best Seller, “Never Say Diet.” Born in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Simmons was motivated to adopt a healthier lifestyle after tipping the scales at 268 pounds upon his high school graduation.

After successfully managing his weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise, Simmons relocated to Los Angeles in 1973. There, he opened his fitness studio, SLIMMONS, in Beverly Hills, where he taught classes until 2013. His charismatic personality and success as an instructor led to appearances on local and national television shows. He even hosted his own nationally syndicated series, “The Richard Simmons Show,” which ran for four years and won several Emmy Awards.

Simmons’ 65 fitness videos sold over 20 million copies. Following his cancer diagnosis, he urged his social media followers to live life to the fullest and appreciate their blessings. He also emphasized the importance of expressing love and affection to loved ones, and suggested indulging in a dessert “once in a while” as part of a balanced lifestyle.
