The fitness world mourns the loss of Richard Simmons, who passed away last month at the age of 76. His brother, Lenny Simmons, confirmed that the cause of death was complications from recent falls and heart disease. The news was relayed to Lenny by the Los Angeles coroner’s office, according to Tom Estey, a spokesperson for the Simmons family.
Richard Simmons, a renowned fitness instructor, was found deceased on July 13, a day after his 76th birthday. His housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, discovered him. Reveles revealed in an interview that Simmons had a fall on July 11, but refused medical attention on his birthday, opting to wait until the next day. Unfortunately, by then, it was too late.
The coroner’s report indicated that Richard’s death was accidental, with heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report showed no signs of illicit substances, only prescribed medication. The family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
Reveles shared that prior to his death, Simmons was unable to exercise or teach fitness classes due to his health condition. He had undergone knee replacement surgery and was in need of another. In 2014, Simmons confided in Reveles that he could no longer jump and felt it was time for him to retire from his fitness career.
A private funeral was held for Simmons in Los Angeles on July 19, attended by his family and closest friends. He was laid to rest at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary.
Lenny Simmons, in an interview following his brother’s death, urged people not to be sad but to remember Richard for the joy and love he brought to people’s lives. He emphasized Richard’s genuine care for people, as evidenced by his constant communication with thousands of people throughout his career to offer help and support.
