A compassionate father of three was tragically killed, allegedly by a female hitchhiker he had offered a ride to a warming shelter, according to police reports. The accused, 36-year-old Brittany Rivoire, is believed to have fatally shot William Palmer and subsequently stolen his truck in the early hours of a Sunday in St. Louis, Missouri.
Palmer was initially accompanied by a friend when he offered Rivoire a ride. However, the friend was reportedly so disturbed by Rivoire’s behavior that he chose to exit the vehicle, as stated in the criminal complaint. Rivoire, who had a previous conviction in 2024 for tampering with a motor vehicle, is alleged to have shot Palmer in the head before driving the truck several blocks and abandoning it.
Following the incident, Rivoire is said to have hitched another ride before her eventual arrest. The motive behind the fatal shooting remains unclear, but Palmer’s family has noted his propensity for aiding strangers.
Palmer’s fiancé, Riyen Jones, shared that Rivoire had approached Palmer at a gas station, requesting a ride to a warming shelter due to the cold. Jones expressed disbelief at the tragic turn of events, stating, “For somebody to take him for granted when all he was doing was helping her and then to do it to basically take his truck is … I can’t wrap my head around it.”
Palmer, who was collecting scrap metal at the time of his death, was known for his generosity, often offering rides to strangers. Jones recalled warning Palmer about the potential dangers of his kindness, saying, “I used to tell him all the time not to pick up people off the side of the road anymore. He did it a lot. If he saw someone walking, he was picking them up and taking them as far as he could.”
Rivoire now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, armed criminal action, and first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle. She is currently being held in jail without bond.
