Authorities say the victim was a 40-year-old nonverbal woman who used a wheelchair.
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 71-year-old New Jersey man has been charged with first-degree murder after authorities said he strangled his disabled adult daughter inside the family home and later admitted what he had done to his wife, emergency dispatchers and responding officers.
Prosecutors allege Dennis Hall killed his 40-year-old daughter, Devin Hall, at the family’s residence on East Avenue in Franklin Township, about 30 miles south of Philadelphia. The case drew attention because of the victim’s severe disabilities and because investigators say Hall repeatedly acknowledged responsibility after the incident. Authorities initially filed an attempted murder charge while Devin Hall remained hospitalized, then upgraded the case after she died and an autopsy determined her death was a homicide caused by asphyxiation.
According to investigators, the events unfolded early Thursday morning. Jan Hall told reporters that she was asleep when her husband woke her shortly after 6 a.m. and made a statement she initially struggled to comprehend. She said he told her that he had strangled their daughter and that she was dead. Jan Hall later recalled believing she must have misheard him because of the shocking nature of the statement. The family lived together in the Franklin Township home, where Devin Hall required extensive care. Authorities said Devin Hall was nonverbal and used a wheelchair. After learning what had happened, Jan Hall attempted lifesaving measures and performed CPR while efforts were made to get her daughter medical treatment. Investigators said Dennis Hall also called 911 and reported that his daughter was not breathing. Prosecutors later alleged that he admitted strangling her during that emergency call and again when officers arrived at the residence.
Law enforcement officials said medical personnel transported Devin Hall to a hospital, where she was placed on life support. She survived for a short period after the alleged assault but died the following day. That development changed the direction of the criminal case. Prosecutors said Hall was initially charged with attempted murder while doctors continued treatment. Following Devin Hall’s death, authorities elevated the charge to first-degree murder. An autopsy conducted over the weekend concluded that the immediate cause of death was asphyxiation and classified the manner of death as homicide. Investigators have released limited information about the moments immediately preceding the alleged attack. However, Jan Hall said she believed the incident began after her daughter wet the bed. She said her husband could have awakened her and asked for assistance instead. Authorities have not publicly detailed whether any additional evidence, such as physical evidence from the room or witness statements beyond family accounts, will be presented in future court proceedings.
The case has also focused attention on the challenges faced by families caring for relatives with significant disabilities. Devin Hall’s obituary described her as a woman who endured many hardships throughout her life while remaining a source of inspiration to those around her. Family members remembered her for her gentle nature and presence within the community. The allegations against Dennis Hall stand in sharp contrast to those tributes. Jan Hall said her husband had been dealing with mental health problems during the past year and was receiving treatment for depression. She told local media that she had worried something serious could happen, though she did not provide specific details about prior incidents. Authorities have not publicly linked any diagnosed mental illness to the alleged crime, and court records released so far do not indicate whether Hall plans to raise a mental health defense. Prosecutors have likewise not announced whether additional charges could be pursued as the investigation continues.
Hall remained in custody at the Salem County Jail as the case moved through the early stages of the criminal justice process. Prosecutors have publicly identified the murder charge but have not disclosed a detailed timeline for upcoming hearings. Court records available at the time of reporting did not show a scheduled appearance date. Investigators are expected to continue reviewing evidence gathered from the home, medical findings and statements obtained after the incident. The first-degree murder charge carries the possibility of severe penalties if prosecutors secure a conviction. As the case advances, attorneys and the court will likely address issues including Hall’s statements to police, the circumstances surrounding the 911 call and any medical or psychological evidence that may become relevant. Additional filings are expected to provide a clearer picture of the prosecution’s theory and the defense response.
Neighbors and community members have been left grappling with the loss of a woman whom relatives described as vulnerable and dependent on those around her. Jan Hall spoke publicly about her grief, saying she wished she understood why her husband allegedly acted as investigators claim. She described the aftermath as feeling like a nightmare and said she continued to struggle with the reality of losing her daughter. Those comments underscored the emotional impact of the case beyond the courtroom. While investigators focus on evidence and legal proceedings, family members are mourning Devin Hall and remembering the life she lived despite substantial physical and communication challenges. Her obituary portrayed a woman whose struggles never prevented her from affecting others through kindness and perseverance, a remembrance that now stands alongside the criminal allegations facing her father.
The investigation remains active. Dennis Hall is being held on a first-degree murder charge, and authorities have not yet announced a date for his next court appearance. Prosecutors are expected to release additional information as the case moves through the judicial process.
