A tragic incident unfolded on the shores of California’s Garrapata State Beach when a Canadian father lost his life in a heroic attempt to save his five-year-old daughter from being swept away by a massive wave. The father, identified as 39-year-old Yuji Hu from Calgary, Alberta, was visiting the beach with his wife and two children when the disaster occurred.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Hu witnessed a large wave engulf his daughter and pull her into the sea. Without hesitation, he plunged into the turbulent waters in an attempt to rescue her. His wife also jumped in to assist, but was unable to reach her husband and daughter. She managed to return to shore, where their two-year-old child was waiting.
Hu was eventually pulled from the water by a fellow beachgoer and an off-duty California State Parks Officer. Despite their best efforts to administer life-saving techniques, Hu was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The mother, whose identity has not been disclosed, was briefly hospitalized for hypothermia but was released the following day in stable condition. Their two-year-old child was unharmed in the incident. However, the couple’s daughter, last seen wearing a white shirt and without a life jacket, remains missing despite a large-scale search operation that continued until sunset.
The incident occurred amidst catastrophic flash flooding caused by an atmospheric river that has been battering the central and southern coasts of California. The severe weather conditions have resulted in deadly flash floods, landslides, strong winds, and heavy rain across the region. In Santa Barbara County alone, over four inches of rain fell on Friday.
The storm has also claimed other lives in the state. A 71-year-old delivery driver near Sacramento was killed after his car was swept away by strong currents, and four people died when a wooden boat carrying suspected migrants capsized off the coast of San Diego.
The Hu family has requested privacy during this difficult time and has not issued any comments on the tragic incident. Meanwhile, recovery efforts continue along the shores of Garrapata State Beach.
