Father Admits to Beating Crying Newborn to Death

A young father from Arizona, aged 22, is facing the possibility of life imprisonment after being charged with the murder of his newborn daughter. Jonathan Enriquez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse in connection with the death of his infant daughter.

The Mesa Police Department reported that on the morning of July 11, they received a distress call about a newborn baby who was not breathing. The call came from an apartment complex on E. Covina Street, approximately 20 miles east of Phoenix. The caller reportedly told the emergency dispatcher that the baby had choked while being bottle-fed.

Upon their arrival, first responders were handed an unresponsive 4-week-old baby girl. The police and emergency medical services immediately began life-saving measures and transported the infant to a local hospital. The baby was admitted in critical condition.

Investigators found that Enriquez was alone with his daughter when she stopped breathing. They also discovered that the baby had other injuries in various stages of healing. Both parents were interviewed, and during his interview, Enriquez confessed to hitting his child.

Sadly, the baby girl did not survive her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital on July 26. Court documents revealed further details about the tragic incident. Detectives noted several inconsistencies in the parents’ statements after interviewing them.

Initially, both parents claimed that their daughter’s injuries were due to a fall from the bed, a deviation from the original choking story. However, Enriquez later admitted to being forceful while changing the baby. He also suggested that the injuries could have been caused when the baby fell out of her car seat or was hit by a seatbelt buckle.

A forensic examination of Enriquez’s phone revealed a text message sent to the baby’s mother shortly before the 911 call. In the message, Enriquez asked the mother to come home immediately, admitting that he had made a mistake.

Medical professionals determined that the baby had suffered a fractured skull, brain bleed, broken leg, and several broken ribs. The autopsy report suggested that the severe injuries were likely the result of violent actions such as slamming, crushing, or stomping.

When presented with the autopsy findings, Enriquez reportedly confessed to hitting his daughter in the head because she was crying excessively. He expressed deep regret for his actions. Enriquez is currently being held in Maricopa County Jail on a $1 million bond.
