ROEBUCK, S.C. — A family member waiting to pick up a student at Dorman High School died after experiencing a medical emergency during dismissal Thursday, school officials said, prompting the cancellation of home athletic events and an offer of counseling to students who may have witnessed the emergency.
The Sept. 3 death occurred in a visible area in front of the Spartanburg County school as students were leaving for the day. Principal Joshua Dawkins notified families about the emergency and said some students and other people on campus may have witnessed what happened. Officials have not publicly identified the person who died or released the specific nature of the medical emergency.
Emergency personnel responded to the school, and the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office also sent investigators to the scene, according to local reporting. Coroner Rusty Clevenger said investigators saw no apparent injuries or signs of impropriety during their initial examination. His office planned a forensic examination for Friday, Sept. 4. A result from that examination had not been publicly reported in the sources reviewed through Sunday.
Dawkins said all home athletic events scheduled for Thursday evening were canceled following the death. The decision came hours after the emergency during the afternoon dismissal period. School officials did not announce broader closures or changes to the regular class schedule in the reports reviewed.
The principal also directed families toward the school’s mental health counselors if students who witnessed the emergency appeared to need assistance. Dawkins asked the Dorman High School community to keep the affected family in its thoughts and prayers.
