Prosecutors allege Keith Gibson carried out a series of robberies and murders across Pennsylvania and Delaware in 2021.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Testimony is underway in the murder trial of Keith Gibson, a 44-year-old man accused of killing four people in Philadelphia during a violent 2021 crime spree that prosecutors say stretched into neighboring Delaware and left multiple victims dead.
Jurors are reviewing allegations that Gibson committed a string of robberies, shootings and assaults over several months. Prosecutors say the Philadelphia charges involve the deaths of Roy Caban, Eric Flores, Christine Lugo and Gibson’s mother, Christine Gibson. The trial comes after Gibson was already sentenced to life in prison in Delaware for two separate killings committed during the same period, making the current proceedings a key chapter in a broader criminal case that crossed state lines.
According to prosecutors, the events began after Gibson’s release from prison. Court records indicate he had previously been convicted on manslaughter and weapons charges in Delaware and later returned to custody for a probation violation before being released again. Prosecutors allege that on Jan. 28, 2021, Gibson entered a store in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood and fatally shot Roy Caban and Eric Flores. Investigators later connected evidence from the scene to Gibson and began examining whether the killings were linked to additional crimes. Prosecutors have told jurors that the shootings marked the beginning of a violent pattern that continued for months. The state argues that the Philadelphia murders were not isolated incidents but part of a broader sequence of crimes that escalated in frequency and severity as the year progressed.
Prosecutors also allege that less than two weeks after the Germantown killings, Gibson shot and killed his mother, Christine Gibson, while she was working at a community center in Philadelphia. Investigators say that homicide remained unresolved for a period before authorities later tied it to the same investigation. The prosecution has presented the killing as another example of what it describes as a sustained and deliberate campaign of violence. Jurors are expected to hear testimony from detectives, forensic specialists and witnesses involved in the various investigations. Defense attorneys are expected to challenge portions of the prosecution’s account, although details of the defense strategy had not been fully presented during the opening stages of testimony. Several facts surrounding motive and Gibson’s movements between incidents remain subjects of dispute.
The case has drawn attention because of its connection to crimes committed in both Pennsylvania and Delaware. Prosecutors say Gibson traveled into Delaware after the Philadelphia killings. Authorities there allege he entered a Metro PCS store in Elsmere on May 15, 2021, during a robbery and fatally shot 28-year-old Leslie Ruiz-Basilio before stealing her vehicle. Less than a month later, investigators say he killed 42-year-old Ronald Wright during another robbery. Delaware authorities have described those crimes as part of a larger series of offenses that included additional robberies, assaults and an attempted murder. Convictions in the Delaware cases resulted in life prison sentences. Prosecutors now contend the Philadelphia charges address killings that occurred earlier in the alleged sequence and complete the overall picture of the investigation.
Among the most closely watched allegations is the death of Christine Lugo, a 40-year-old Dunkin’ manager. Prosecutors allege that on June 5, 2021, Gibson entered a Dunkin’ location on West Lehigh Avenue while Lugo was working. According to the prosecution, he forced Lugo to open the cash register and surrender approximately $300 before shooting her and fleeing the store. Investigators have described the shooting as an execution-style killing during a robbery. Lugo’s death received significant public attention because she was working a routine shift when the attack occurred. Family members later described her as a dedicated employee and a caring relative whose loss deeply affected those who knew her. Prosecutors say evidence from multiple jurisdictions eventually helped investigators connect the case to other crimes attributed to Gibson.
Authorities say the alleged spree ended shortly after a robbery at a Rite Aid store in Wilmington, Delaware. Prosecutors allege Gibson assaulted a store clerk during that incident before law enforcement officers arrested him. Investigators then began comparing evidence collected by police agencies in both states, leading to additional charges and the development of several homicide cases. The current trial is expected to feature testimony from investigators, forensic experts and people connected to the victims. Family members have attended proceedings as prosecutors reconstruct events that occurred more than five years ago. The outcome could determine Gibson’s legal responsibility for four additional deaths beyond those already addressed in Delaware courts.
The trial remained underway as prosecutors continued presenting evidence. Additional witnesses are expected to testify in the coming days while jurors evaluate allegations tied to the Philadelphia killings. Court officials have not announced when the proceedings are expected to conclude.
