The tranquil region of Tuscany, Italy, has been rocked by the horrific discovery of a decapitated body found in a suitcase. The victim, a 30-year-old Romanian woman named Maria Denisa Paun, had been missing for three weeks from her residence in Prato. Her remains were discovered near a deserted farmhouse in Montecatini Terme, roughly 25 miles west of Florence.
A local security guard, 32-year-old Vasile Frumuzache, also a Romanian national, has confessed to the brutal crime. He admitted to beheading Paun with a knife and subsequently setting her head ablaze. Frumuzache now faces charges of murder and suppression of a corpse.
Paun, who was employed as an escort, had allegedly threatened to reveal her relationship with Frumuzache to his wife if he did not pay her. The two had met on a dating app and had been intimate on the night of the murder. Frumuzache stated that Paun demanded approximately $11,450, threatening to disclose their affair to his wife if he did not pay.
Frumuzache’s confession provided a chilling account of the events that transpired. After strangling Paun, he dismembered her body, placed the remains in a garbage bag, and concealed them in a suitcase. He then drove from the hotel to the remote farmhouse where the suitcase was later found.
Hotel security footage supported Frumuzache’s account. The video showed him entering the hotel with a black bag at 10:50 p.m. on May 15. Roughly two hours later, he was seen departing the hotel with a white suitcase, later identified as Paun’s, which he loaded into his Volkswagen Golf.
Investigators were able to track Frumuzache’s movements after Paun’s disappearance using a GPS installed in his car by his insurance company. This led them to the deserted farmhouse where they discovered Paun’s decapitated body and the white suitcase.
Paun’s case has gripped Italy in recent weeks, with rampant speculation that she may have been abducted by criminal gangs after leaving Rome and traveling to Tuscany last month.
