Dad Punches His 6-Month-Old in the Face

An Ohio resident, 23-year-old Avery Mapes, has been charged with multiple offenses following a series of violent incidents. Mapes, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, is accused of assaulting his six-month-old child and the child’s mother. He was later taken to a hospital where he is said to have assaulted police officers and attempted to bite them, according to court records.

Mapes was reportedly in a highly agitated state, shouting racial slurs and causing a disturbance in the hospital room. He has been charged with assault, endangering children, domestic violence, obstruction, and disorderly conduct in relation to these alleged incidents.

The charges stem from an incident on Thursday when Mapes is said to have attacked his live-in partner and the mother of his child while intoxicated. Court documents reveal that the woman had multiple marks and bruises, allegedly from Mapes’ assault. This included an alleged punch to their six-month-old child’s face, which resulted in several red marks and bruising.

Police reports indicate that Mapes tried to hit the child’s mother multiple times while she was holding the infant, striking the child at least once in the process. When officers arrived at the couple’s Toledo home, they found Mapes’ partner with bloody handprints on the back of her hoodie.

The probable cause statement provides further details about the woman’s injuries, including bruising and red marks on her forehead and upper right area. The statement also suggests that Mapes charged at his partner before initiating his attack, and it appeared as if her arm had been forcefully squeezed.

Following his arrest, Mapes was transported to a local medical facility where he was handcuffed to a bed. Despite these restraints, he is alleged to have dragged the bed around his hospital room in an attempt to assault officers. He also reportedly tried to kick and strike medical staff members and continued to shout racial slurs and profanities while at the facility.

Court documents reveal that Mapes consistently refused to follow commands. He was later released on his own recognizance with an electronic monitoring device and was ordered to stay away from his partner and child. Mapes is scheduled to appear in court on December 17.
