Couple Found Dead in Bathtub During 4-Year-Old’s Birthday

In a shocking event in Brazil, a law enforcement officer and his wife, a business owner, tragically died from heatstroke after spending time in an overly hot bathtub. The couple, who had been consuming alcohol and cocaine, were marking their daughter’s fourth birthday. The victims were identified as Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, a 37-year-old military officer, and his wife, Ana Carolina Silva, a 41-year-old nail salon proprietor. They were found in a motel in Santa Catarina on the evening of August 11.

The couple had spent the day celebrating, indulging in alcohol and cocaine, before visiting a nightclub and checking into the Dallas Motel around midnight. Alarm bells rang when the couple failed to collect their daughter the next day, prompting family members to report them missing. Their bodies were later discovered in the motel’s bathtub.

Authorities concluded that the cause of death was heatstroke, worsened by the presence of alcohol and cocaine in their systems, which likely hindered their ability to react to the extreme heat. The water in the bathtub was found to have reached a temperature of 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and a space heater in the room was also set to a high temperature.

Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza stated that the cause of death was exogenous poisoning, which led to severe dehydration, thermal collapse, organ failure, and ultimately, death. Toxicology tests confirmed the presence of cocaine and high levels of alcohol in their blood.

Dr. Fernando Oliva da Fonseca, Director of Forensic Medicine for the Scientific Police, explained that the combination of cocaine and alcohol could induce a state of physical dormancy, or torpor, in which the body’s metabolic rate slows significantly. This state, combined with the extreme heat, likely prevented the couple from reacting to their dangerous situation.

Further investigations ruled out other potential causes of death such as carbon monoxide poisoning, drowning, or electric shock. The police also confirmed that no third party was involved in the incident. The couple had been together for nearly 20 years and had no history of violence in their relationship. Following the incident, Carolina’s family issued a statement denying her drug use and suggesting she was coerced into consuming the substances.
