Brian Matusz, a former pitcher for the Orioles, is suspected to have died from a drug overdose, as per a police report from Phoenix. Matusz was discovered deceased in his residence by his mother, Elizabeth, on January 6. Drug-related items were found near him, along with a white substance in his mouth. Elizabeth Matusz informed the police that her son, aged 37, had a history of substance abuse and had recently expressed feelings of despair.
Elizabeth had taken her son to the emergency room two days prior to his death. The specifics of this visit have been redacted in the police report, but it is known that Matusz was advised to seek assistance from a mental health professional. Later that day, Elizabeth took her son to the Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottsdale, but he was not admitted.
The police are still investigating the circumstances of Matusz’s death, and further details have been withheld at the family’s request. Matusz, a Phoenix native, was a top MLB pitching prospect during his time at the University of San Diego. He was selected by the Orioles as the No. 4 pick in the 2008 MLB Draft.
Despite showing promise, Matusz never fully realized the potential the Orioles saw in him. Over nine seasons, he had a record of 27-41 with a 4.92 ERA. His last appearance in the major leagues was with the Cubs in 2016. In 2019, Matusz attempted a comeback with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.
Elizabeth Matusz told police that her son had recently reflected on his past success, stating that he used to “have it all.” Jerry Hairston Jr., a former Oriole and friend of Matusz, spoke about the difficulties of adjusting to life after retirement, particularly at a young age. Hairston expressed his shock and sadness at Matusz’s untimely death, describing him as an “incredible human being.”
