Police and fire investigators examined the scene for hours but said preliminary evidence showed no criminal involvement or threat to the public.
GILBERT, Ariz. — An adult was found dead inside a burned vehicle early Wednesday after police and firefighters responded to a car fire at a Gilbert business complex near Higley and Williams Field roads, authorities said.
Gilbert Police and Gilbert Fire & Rescue were called to the vehicle fire shortly before 12:30 a.m. Sept. 23. Firefighters extinguished the flames and discovered the person dead inside the vehicle. Police said their preliminary investigation had not uncovered suspicious circumstances connected to the death or fire.
Investigators from both departments remained at the scene through the overnight hours and into Wednesday morning. Police later said evidence collected at the scene and nearby surveillance video indicated the incident appeared to be isolated. Authorities reported no evidence of criminal involvement or foul play at that stage of the investigation.
The identity of the person found inside the vehicle had not been publicly released. Authorities also had not announced the cause of death or explained what started the vehicle fire. Those unanswered questions remained part of the investigation as police detectives and fire investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Video from Arizona’s Family showed the burned remains of a blue sedan in a dirt area behind the shopping center. The station also reported that investigators wearing protective equipment examined the vehicle while part of a nearby Walgreens parking area was blocked with crime scene tape. The restricted area allowed investigators to work around the vehicle and surrounding property.
Gilbert police said the preliminary evidence did not indicate that anyone else was being sought in connection with the incident. Authorities also said there was no current concern for the safety of people in the surrounding community. Police have not announced any arrests or identified a suspected criminal act connected to the death.
The finding that the circumstances did not appear suspicious was preliminary and did not establish the medical cause of the person’s death or the cause of the fire. Officials had not publicly released information about how long the vehicle had been at the business complex, when the fire began or whether the person died before or during the blaze.
The investigation brought a substantial police and fire presence to the commercial area Wednesday morning. Access near the vehicle was restricted while investigators processed the scene, though later reports citing Gilbert police said the area was cleared and the business complex reopened after investigators completed their work there.
Authorities have not released the deceased person’s name or additional identifying information. The investigation remained ongoing, with Gilbert police and fire officials working to determine the circumstances of the vehicle fire and the person’s death even as police said they had found no evidence of foul play.
