An Italian-Egyptian belly dancer, Sohila Tarek Hassan Haggag, was recently arrested in Egypt for allegedly using provocative dance techniques. Haggag, who is a naturalized Italian citizen but was born in Egypt and maintains dual citizenship, was detained by authorities at Cairo International Airport on June 22. She is facing charges of corrupting public morals through her suggestive dance performances.
The case against Haggag, who performs under the stage name Linda Martino, was initiated due to videos posted on her Instagram account. In these videos, she is seen dancing in revealing attire and making bold statements about her performances, describing herself as “more than you can handle.” Investigators have accused her of wearing inappropriate clothing and intentionally exposing sensitive body parts, which they claim is a clear violation of societal norms.
Prosecutors in Cairo have alleged that Haggag used seductive techniques and provocative dances to incite vice. During her arrest, authorities reportedly found a significant amount of money in her possession. The Italian embassy in Cairo is currently working towards securing her release.
Haggag is expected to remain in custody for at least two more weeks. She reportedly relocated back to Egypt several years ago and has since built a successful career in belly dancing. She was previously married to an Italian citizen.
In recent years, Egypt has been cracking down on activities that are considered morally questionable. Under the presidency of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, five belly dancers have been imprisoned on charges similar to those Haggag is currently facing.
