Apple Discontinues Popular iPhone Accessory Many Users Need

Apple Inc. seems to have silently phased out a once-popular accessory that was crucial for some iPhone users. The 3.5mm Lightning to Headphone Jack Adapter, which has been out of stock on Apple’s UK and US websites for a while, allowed users to connect iPhones without a headphone jack to a variety of devices. These included wired headphones, speakers, car audio systems, and airplane entertainment systems. As Apple transitions from its proprietary Lightning port to USB-C, this once ubiquitous and necessary accessory may be permanently discontinued.

The adapter was first introduced in 2016, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 7. This marked Apple’s contentious decision to eliminate the 3.5mm headphone jack from the device. This change posed a problem for many iPhone users, as their older wired headphones or non-Apple headphones were no longer compatible. The Lightning to 3.5mm Adapter offered a solution, enabling users to continue using their existing headphones with the new iPhones.

The gradual phase-out of the Lightning connector culminated with the iPhone 15 in 2023, which officially transitioned to USB-C. For several years, the adapter was included with every new iPhone from the iPhone 7 to the iPhone XS, which was released in 2018. However, by that time, many iPhone owners had transitioned to wireless options like the Lightning EarPods or Bluetooth AirPods, and the adapter was no longer included with the device. It continued to be sold separately at Apple stores for approximately $9, but now it seems to be vanishing from stores entirely.

While the Lightning to 3.5mm Adapter is no longer available in the UK and US, it can still be found in some countries such as France, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. They are also still available for purchase on some non-Apple-affiliated sites, including Amazon.

This change has been met with frustration by some die-hard iPhone users, but it is evident that Apple is fully committed to USB-C as the future of its devices.
