Yirmar Martinez escaped after gunfire erupted at a Cedar Hill property, and police later confirmed an arrest in the case.
CEDAR HILL, Texas — An Amazon Flex delivery driver is recovering after she was shot twice while attempting to deliver a package before dawn in Cedar Hill, with police saying a person has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
Yirmar Martinez, 23, said she was working an early-morning delivery route on Oct. 12 when she arrived at a property off North Cedar Hill Road, south of Dallas. The area was dark, and Martinez said she was having trouble identifying the correct entrance and front door. Cedar Hill police later confirmed an arrest but had not publicly identified the person or announced charges as of Friday.
Martinez told FOX 4 that she switched on her vehicle’s high beams while trying to locate the delivery point and drove toward an access road near the house. She then saw a man carrying a gun. Martinez said she raised her Amazon vest in an effort to show that she was making a delivery. She said the man displayed a package and spoke to her in English, which she did not understand, before gunfire began.
Martinez said she was struck twice. One bullet grazed the top of her head and another struck her lower back, according to her account to local news outlets. She remained able to drive and tried to get away from the property as additional shots were fired in her direction. Authorities have not publicly said what they believe prompted the shooting or whether the person who fired knew Martinez was an Amazon delivery driver.
Martinez told Univision that she struck a mailbox while fleeing but continued driving. She eventually reached a motorcyclist who was stopped at a traffic light, and the motorcyclist helped summon emergency assistance, according to the station. Martinez survived her injuries and was later able to return home as she continued recovering.
Her husband, Leonel Campos, was connected to Martinez by video call during part of the incident, according to Univision. Campos, who was also working as a delivery driver that morning, said he urged his wife to keep driving as she tried to escape. Martinez told the station she feared she might lose consciousness before she could reach help.
Martinez said she had been working through Amazon Flex for about six months. The program uses independent delivery partners who select delivery blocks and generally use their own vehicles to transport packages. Martinez told FOX 4 that she moved from Venezuela to Texas about two years ago. She said she preferred early-morning routes because the schedule gave her more time with her 5-year-old son.
Cedar Hill police confirmed to FOX 4 that an arrest had been made in connection with the shooting. Police had not released the person’s identity because charges had not yet been announced. Martinez met with investigators Thursday, and she told the station that police were continuing to hold her vehicle as evidence while the investigation proceeded.
Amazon said in a statement provided to FOX 4 that the safety of delivery partners is a priority and that the company had contacted Martinez to make sure she was aware of available support. The company said it was reviewing the incident and would cooperate with law enforcement as investigators worked to determine what happened.
The shooting remained under investigation Friday. Cedar Hill police had not publicly identified the arrested person, announced possible charges or disclosed a suspected motive. Authorities also had not released a final account explaining what led to the confrontation at the property.
