A tragic incident unfolded in Georgia when a 79-year-old woman was fatally hit by an Amazon delivery vehicle. The woman, identified as Sandra Fitts, was crossing the street after visiting a family cemetery near her former residence when the incident occurred. Local law enforcement has reported that the driver, 25-year-old London Rozier Best, is now facing charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death.
The incident took place on the evening of November 12, in the vicinity of Canton, a small city approximately 41 miles north-northwest of Atlanta. Law enforcement was alerted to a hit-and-run incident on Cumming Highway near the intersection of Jordan Lane. Fitts was pronounced dead at the scene, with authorities suggesting she likely died instantly upon impact with the Rivian Delivery vehicle.
A deputy responding to the accident noticed an Amazon truck turning down Bishop Drive and called for backup to search for the vehicle. Shortly after, a local police officer found an Amazon delivery truck on the same street, showing damage consistent with the hit-and-run incident.
Investigations confirmed that the Amazon truck in question was indeed the vehicle involved in the fatal accident. According to Capt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Fitts and her husband had recently sold their home but continued to visit the area due to the family plot at the nearby cemetery. Fitts was known to visit the cemetery to remember her deceased relatives and feed wild cats.
Baker described the incident as a “very unfortunate situation,” noting that the driver seemed aware of the accident but continued to deliver packages in the area. The loss has deeply affected the surviving family members.
Fitts’ obituary highlighted her love for her family, her 60-year marriage, her fondness for cats, and her dedication to maintaining a clean home and yard. She is survived by several family members, including three grandchildren.
Best now faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence due to the fatal accident. Baker noted that if Best had not fled the scene, he likely would not have faced such serious charges. In addition to the hit-and-run charges, Best also faces minor marijuana-related charges after a search of the Amazon delivery truck reportedly revealed drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Amazon has stated that Best will be suspended from driving for the company pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. The company expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended its condolences to the victim’s family, pledging to support local police in their investigation. Best is currently being held without bond.
