The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later ruled the teenager’s Sept. 29 death a suicide.
LOS ANGELES — Fiona Lowe, the 13-year-old daughter of actor Chad Lowe and producer Kim Painter, died Sept. 29, her family announced, remembering her as a smart, creative teenager who loved to dance.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later ruled Fiona’s death a suicide, according to records cited by the Los Angeles Times and other news organizations. She died at a hospital. Her family had not disclosed a cause when it first announced her death and asked for prayers and privacy while relatives mourned.
In a statement released to People, the Lowe family said it was “deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona.” The family described her as “a loving young girl who was smart, creative, and loved to dance.” Her parents said she was deeply loved by them and adored by her sisters.
Fiona Hepler Lowe was the middle of Lowe and Painter’s three daughters. Her older sister, Mabel, is 17, and her younger sister, Nixie, is 10. Fiona was born Nov. 16, 2012, and turned 13 in November 2025. Lowe marked that birthday publicly with a social media tribute encouraging his daughter to keep dancing through life.
The family called Fiona “the light of our lives” and said her death had devastated them. Their statement also directed people struggling with mental health to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which can be reached by calling or texting 988.
Lowe, 58, is an Emmy-winning actor known for television roles including “Life Goes On,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “9-1-1: Lone Star.” He is the younger brother of actor Rob Lowe. Painter is a producer, and she and Lowe married in 2010.
The family had faced another major loss in 2025 when its Pacific Palisades home was destroyed in the Los Angeles-area wildfires. Lowe later shared images of his daughters visiting what remained of the property and wrote about their resilience. The family has not publicly connected that earlier loss to Fiona’s death.
Initial reports published after the family’s announcement said Fiona’s cause of death had not been released. The medical examiner’s subsequent determination provided an official manner of death, updating those earlier accounts. The family has not publicly released further details about the circumstances surrounding Fiona’s death.
The Lowes continue to ask for privacy as they mourn Fiona. Public tributes have focused on her creativity, her love of dance and her close relationship with her parents and sisters.
