84-Year-Old Killed After Vehicle Falls Five Stories

Police say the 84-year-old driver’s vehicle broke through a fifth-floor retaining wall before landing upside down on a downtown sidewalk.

HONOLULU — An 84-year-old woman died Friday after the vehicle she was driving broke through a retaining wall on the fifth floor of a downtown Honolulu parking structure and fell about five stories onto a sidewalk, police said.

The crash happened at about 2:28 p.m. Oct. 9 inside a private parking structure at 1088 Bishop St., according to the Honolulu Police Department. Investigators said the woman was driving north on the fifth floor when her vehicle struck and breached the wall. The vehicle landed on its roof along South Hotel Street. Emergency medical personnel pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

Police said the woman was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred. Authorities had not publicly identified her as of Sunday, and investigators had not determined what caused the vehicle to strike the retaining wall. Police said it remained unknown whether speed, drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

Emergency crews responded to the Bishop and Hotel streets area shortly after the vehicle fell. Hawaii News Now reported that crews gathered around the overturned SUV outside a convenience store and that damage could be seen on the parking structure above. The scene prompted authorities to restrict access to part of the surrounding downtown area while emergency workers and investigators operated at the site.

Hotel Street was temporarily closed between Bishop and Bethel streets during the investigation, according to local reports. The closure affected a section of downtown Honolulu while police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel examined the scene and worked around the damaged vehicle.

Initial information released by emergency officials described the victim as an 80-year-old woman, but Honolulu police later identified her age as 84. Police classified the incident as a non-traffic motor vehicle fatality because it began inside a private parking facility rather than on a public roadway.

The death was the fourth non-traffic fatality recorded on Oahu in 2026, according to the Police Department. At the same point in 2025, police had recorded no fatalities in that category. Authorities did not indicate that any other people were injured in Friday’s incident.

The Police Department’s Traffic Division Vehicular Homicide Section is investigating the crash. Officials had not announced a cause as of Sunday, and police said the investigation remained ongoing.
