Allen County authorities said the child was playing inside a Savonburg home before the reported electrical accident Thursday night.
SAVONBURG, Kan. — A 4-year-old child died after reportedly receiving an electrical shock from a clothes dryer inside a southeast Kansas home, authorities said, in an incident investigators currently believe was a tragic accident.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were alerted shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, to a report of a child who was not breathing. By the time authorities received the call, the child’s parents were already driving the unconscious child toward Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators were told the child had been playing inside a residence in the 200 block of North Walnut Street in Savonburg when the child allegedly received an electrical shock from a 220-volt clothes dryer. The child was later declared dead at the hospital. Authorities have not publicly released the child’s name.
The sheriff’s office said it was continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials said no foul play was suspected based on the information available and that the incident appeared to have been an accident. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges or identified anyone as a suspect.
Officials have not publicly explained what caused the dryer to become electrically hazardous or whether investigators found a problem involving the appliance, its wiring, the electrical connection or another part of the home. The sheriff’s office also has not released additional details about exactly how the child came into contact with the appliance.
The sheriff’s statement did not identify the child’s parents or other family members. It also did not say whether anyone else was in the room at the time of the reported shock. Those details remained undisclosed as investigators continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding the death.
Savonburg is a small community in Allen County in southeast Kansas. The child was taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in nearby Chanute after the parents called 911 while traveling with the unconscious child, authorities said.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the child’s family and others affected by the death, including dispatchers, first responders and hospital personnel who handled the emergency. Authorities described the incident as a tragic accident while emphasizing that the investigation remained active.
No further findings about the electrical system or dryer had been publicly announced as of Monday. The Allen County Sheriff’s Office remained responsible for investigating the child’s death, and officials had not reported evidence of foul play.
