4-Year-Old Boy Killed by Amazon Delivery Driver

Police said the Amazon-marked vehicle remains in custody while detectives prepare the case for prosecutors.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 4-year-old boy died after an Amazon-marked delivery vehicle struck him Monday evening near Maple Park in northeast Kansas City, police said, and the driver was later released while detectives finish a fatal crash file for prosecutors.

Tadens Joseph was playing near the park in the 1800 block of East 3rd Terrace just before 6:30 p.m. May 4 when the crash happened, according to police. The case has drawn attention because investigators said the driver stopped at first, then left before officers arrived. Police said no charges had been filed as of Wednesday, May 6, and the case remained active.

Investigators said the Amazon-marked delivery vehicle had just completed a package stop and was headed west on East 3rd Terrace toward Woodland Avenue when Tadens entered the road and was hit. Police and paramedics were called, but the child died from his injuries. Kansas City police said the driver initially stopped after the collision. A family member then followed the vehicle and told the driver what had happened, police said. The driver denied being involved and left again, according to investigators.

Detectives later identified a person of interest and took that person into custody for further investigation. Police said the driver, who has not been publicly named, was released after prosecutors were consulted because charges had not yet been filed. The department said fatal crash investigations often require more time than police can legally hold someone without charges. Investigators are expected to gather witness accounts, scene reconstruction findings, forensic evidence, possible video and other records before the case is sent to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Amazon said the driver was not an Amazon employee, but worked for an independent delivery service partner. The company said it was cooperating with Kansas City police. “Our deepest sympathies are with the child’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” Amazon said in a statement. “We’ll cooperate fully with the Kansas City Police Department in their active investigation and defer to them for additional details.” Police said both Amazon and the local third-party delivery company connected to the route were contacted and were cooperating. The vehicle involved remained in police custody for processing.

Police have not said whether speed, distraction, visibility, road layout or vehicle condition played a role. They also have not released a full crash diagram or said whether nearby cameras captured the collision or the driver’s actions afterward. The crash occurred near Maple Park, a neighborhood green space in the Pendleton Heights area where families often gather. Local reports said Tadens’ family is from Haiti and speaks little English. Relatives said the boy loved school, Spider-Man, soccer and pizza. A pizza he was expected to eat Monday night remained untouched the next day as relatives mourned him.

Neighbors described the area as a place where children are often outside. Toni Hunter, who lives near the park, said she often saw the family gathered there. “It’s really sad,” Hunter said. Another neighbor, Leo Contreras, said the crash was hard to understand because it happened near a park. “You wouldn’t expect it, especially near a park,” Contreras said. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas also mourned Tadens’ death and warned drivers to be careful near parks, saying people should slow down and watch for children and pedestrians.

The death was Kansas City’s 25th traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 21 at the same point last year, according to local reports citing police figures. The case is separate from broader traffic safety debates, but its location near a park and homes has made it especially painful for neighbors. Police have not said how far the vehicle traveled after leaving the first stop or how soon the family member caught up with the driver. They also have not released autopsy findings or a final crash reconstruction report.

The next step is a charging review by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office after detectives complete the case file. Police said that process can take several weeks in fatal crash cases. As of May 7, the driver was out of custody, the vehicle remained with police and the investigation was still active.
