36 Dead After Stampede at Political Rally

A devastating event unfolded at a political gathering in Tamil Nadu, a southern Indian state, when a stampede led to the deaths of at least 36 individuals, including eight children, and injured 40 others. The state’s health minister, Ma Subramanian, confirmed the incident late Saturday, noting that the victims were already deceased upon arrival at the hospital, while the injured were in stable condition.

The rally was organized for Vijay, a popular actor-turned-politician in Tamil Nadu, and was attended by tens of thousands of supporters. As Vijay addressed the massive crowd, a group of his fans and supporters fell while attempting to approach his bus, triggering the fatal stampede. The rally took place under extreme heat, and Vijay’s arrival was delayed by several hours, according to officials.

Subramanian characterized the rally as lacking discipline and announced that an investigation into the incident has been initiated. Reports revealed that at least 30 people fainted during Vijay’s speech and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals. Vijay paused his speech when he was alerted to the situation but resumed shortly after. However, he concluded his speech early upon realizing the severity of the situation.

Vijay expressed his sorrow over the incident hours later. “My heart is shattered,” he posted on social media. “I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, describing the incident as “deeply saddening.” He extended his thoughts to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

In Tamil Nadu and other southern Indian states, film stars often enjoy a larger-than-life status, deeply rooted in the ancient Tamil culture of hero worship and image worship. Many have transitioned into politics, and some have even been revered as divine figures. Vijay, who retired from acting in 2024, founded his own political party. However, it remains unclear whether he intends to run for office in Tamil Nadu state.

Stampedes are not uncommon in India, particularly during large gatherings. Earlier this year, a stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival, the world’s largest religious gathering, resulted in the death of at least 30 people as tens of thousands of Hindus rushed to bathe in a sacred river.
