Gunfire Erupts During Private Sale Gone Wrong

Police said the seller was shot in the leg after refusing a demand for more property.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A man was shot during a jewelry sale late Wednesday at a Southwest Side apartment complex after a would-be buyer pulled a gun and demanded more items, San Antonio police said.

The shooting happened just after 10 p.m. in a parking lot on Excellence Drive, where police said two men had met for a private jewelry exchange. The injured man was taken to a hospital for treatment and was reported in stable condition. The suspect fled before officers arrived and had not been publicly identified.

Police said the meeting turned violent when the suspect grabbed one piece of jewelry, pulled out a firearm and demanded more property. The seller refused, and the two men began fighting, according to officers at the scene. During the struggle, the suspect fired one shot, hitting the seller in the leg. Police said the shooter then left the apartment complex in a vehicle.

The shooting was reported at The Scott at Medio Creek Apartments, a large residential community at 9130 Excellence Drive near Old Pearsall Road. Officers searched the area after the gunfire, but no arrest was announced. Police did not release the victim’s name, age or a detailed suspect description. It also was not immediately clear whether the jewelry sale had been arranged online or through another private contact.

The apartment complex sits in a growing Southwest Side corridor near Loop 410, Lackland-area neighborhoods and Medio Creek Elementary School. The property is listed as a 324-unit community. Police have described the case as an active investigation, with robbery and aggravated assault among the possible issues investigators may review.

No charges had been announced as of the latest public update. Investigators were expected to keep reviewing witness statements, possible surveillance video and any evidence recovered from the parking lot. Police said the suspect remained at large after fleeing in a vehicle, and officials had not said whether the stolen jewelry item had been recovered.

The case adds to a series of San Antonio incidents in which private sales or attempted exchanges have turned violent. In this case, police said the violence began during what appeared to be a direct meeting between a seller and buyer, not during a store robbery. No other injuries were reported at the apartment complex.

The investigation remained open Thursday, with the victim recovering and police still working to identify and find the shooter.
