A tragic incident unfolded in Lenoir, North Carolina, when a 16-month-old toddler, known as “Maddy,” failed to wake up from her nap on her first day at a daycare center. The mother, who had dropped off Maddy at the Creative Beginnings daycare center, received the devastating news via a phone call. The incident, which occurred on Monday, was described as “heartbreaking” and “nerve-wracking” on a GoFundMe page set up by a family friend.
Throughout the day, the mother had been receiving updates about Maddy and her other child who were both at the daycare center. However, the call that Maddy did not wake up from her nap was unexpected and shocking. Emergency medical services were immediately dispatched to the daycare center, where they attempted to revive the toddler. Despite their efforts, Maddy was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The Lenoir Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the toddler’s death. An autopsy was performed by the county medical examiner, which led the police to treat the case as a criminal matter. The investigation led to the arrest of Alexandra Coffey, a 29-year-old employee of Creative Beginnings.
Coffey was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Wednesday and was taken into custody without any resistance. She was held at the Caldwell County Detention Center on a $500,000 secured bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
In the wake of the incident, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services suspended the license of Creative Beginnings. The department ordered the daycare center to cease operations by the end of business on Wednesday, citing that the suspension was necessary for public health, safety, and welfare.
Prior to the incident, Creative Beginnings had been cited for safety violations related to CPR and first aid during unscheduled inspections. However, the daycare center had rectified these issues by September 2024 and held a five-star ranking at the time of Maddy’s death. The daycare center is reportedly cooperating with the police in the ongoing investigation.
